Moraitika travel and Holiday guide

Moraitika resort – Popular lively developed resort near Corfu Town
Moraitika is situated on a coastal plain on the east coast of Corfu and has a backdrop of olive grove covered hills. Moraitika is just 20km from the capital Corfu town (Kerkyra) and the airport. Benitses resort is 4 miles north. Moraitika has grown a great deal over the years and is now a very developed resort that is tending to merge with the Messonghi resort on the other side of the river Messonghi, which forms the border between the two. The original village of Ano Moraitika still exists on the hill above but is now dwarfed by the largely purpose-built Moraitika holiday resort that runs along either side of the coast road. Moraitika village is based around this main strip which has plenty of bars, tavernas and restaurants, many offering British options alongside Greek favourites. There are plenty of lively clubs and discos open until late but the resort is not as wild as the youth resort of Kavos. Moraitika appeals to a cosmopolitan mix of families, younger couples and   those wanting plenty of lively entertainment, plentiful budget to mid-range accommodation and a sandy beach close to Corfu town.

Moraitika beach – Sandy safe and shallow

Moraitika holiday resort is just a few hundred metres above the beach, which is a little quieter. Moraitika beach is a popular, long mixture of sand and shingle with warm, shallow water for safe bathing and swimming for children. In Moraitika you can make use of a diving centre and other water sport facilities and enjoy boat trips and go-karting.

Corfu Moraitika - Old hillside village with views

Moraitika has some Roman remains to visit and visitors should certainly take a couple of strolls up to the original village of Ano Moraitika, a contrast from the main resort with its narrow lanes and picturesque unspoilt little flower-decked houses. Here you will find excellent tavernas, and superb views from the church of Theotokou Kimiseos. Fisherman still work from the river that separates Moraitika from Messonghi. Moraitika is served by regular buses south to Kavos and Messonghi and north to Benitses and the fascinating capital Corfu town.
The Aqualand waterpark is another popular local excursion.

About Corfu island

One of the first Greek islands to suffer from vulgar mass tourism in the 1960s, Corfu (also named as Korfu) has squandered much of its natural beauty to demands of cut-price holiday firms. Beautiful bays have been scarred by cheap hotels, happy hour bars and noisy discos. Yet some of the loveliest beaches in Corfu and most romantic villages can be found just a few minutes walk away. The remote west, in particular, can still lay claim to unspoiled beaches and some impossibly beautiful scenery.
corfu
A favourite since Victorian times Corfu is still the most popular Greek island for Brits. Around 490,000 went at the last count, more than Crete or Rhodes and 10,000 Brits now live there. Cheap air travel once made it a major target of downmarket package holiday firms and in the 70s its lager-and-chips reputation was a byword for the vulgar face of the British abroad.
Cement replaced cypress as heartless hotels and sprawling holiday resorts proliferated. Corfu beaches were scarred and once-peaceful hamlets heaved with the cream of the UK's brain dead drunks. Fortunately the worst was contained along the narrow coastal strip north and south of Corfu town, leaving many parts of the island relatively unscathed. That said beaches are some of the best in Greece and with 31 of them designated blue flag they are the cleanest and safest. Corfu resorts that avoided the cement mixer are still the loveliest in Greece and the regenerated Corfu town itself is one of the finest, if most expensive, to be found in the greek.
islands. North Corfu is dominated by mountains while the centre and south are home to lush farmland and islanders that are famously friendly - even by Greek standards. Corfu is also the nearest Greek island to the UK with around three hours flight time.

Moraitika overview
About 20 klms. south of Corfu town, Moraitika is a laid back resort with a good sprinkling of tavernas and bars. The area has its own attraction and a good large sandy beach. Close neighbour Messonghi has never lost its small, typical Greek village atmosphere with traditional tavernas and local bars.
Moraitika beach is small and sandy/shingly. The entire area is slower in pace than the north of the Corfu island, but not lacking in charm or delightful ambience - a touch of the "real" Greece.
