Essential information to the South part of Corfu?
There are a number of beautiful sights and interesting activities to do should you choose to explore the Southern part of the island of Corfu. Booking great family holiday deals at any of the numerous mid-range and budget accommodations available throughout the area. Of course you can always opt to stay at any of the more higher priced and luxurious resorts nearby but there are also places to stay to suit your budget, you just have to be persistent to search for those with the most affordable rates.
Perama and Benitses are major tourist resort, while the Achilion Palace just outside the Gastouri was the summer residence of the Empress Elizabeth of Austria and later Kaiser Wilhelm. Kaiser's Bridge between Perama and Benitses was where the Kaiser used to anchor his yacht. Agios Ioannis Peristeron has a long sandy beach with many facilities. It is popular with locals as well as tourists. Further to South Corfu, Moraitika and Messonghi are two popular holiday resorts with good beaches. All routes on South Corfu meet near Agios Mattheos which was a Monastery on the top of the Mountain of the same name, a prehistoric site and, nearby, the remains of a Byzantine castle (at Gardiki) and access to Lake Korission, Corfu's largest lake. There are excellent beaches at the lake continuing all way to South Corfu. St George bay near Argyrades village is the major resort in the area. On the east coast, around Boukari you can enjoy the old world charmof wooded slopes and characterful Corfu villages.
Lefkimmi is the agricultural centre of South Corfu and still retains much of its 19th century character. On the South east coast nearby there are many beaches.
